An exhibition has opened at the National Maritime Museum in Cornwall featuring interviews with scores of wartime Merchant Navy veterans.
Running until 26 June, Cruel Sea brings together the thoughts and reminiscences of those who served in the Merchant Navy in a fascinating sound, film and photograph montage.
The aim of the project is to raise awareness of the Merchant Navy’s wartime role.
Charity Age Exchange has carried out the bulk of the interviews, which now amount to 1,800 transcribed pages and more than 100 hours of filmed and recorded interviews.
When the project ends the material will be kept as a unique document and, in line with the veterans’ wishes, given to museums to keep in their archives and save for public and educational use.
