Burning ones boats

Boat burning ceremonies have become all the rage.

Boat burning ceremonies have become all the rage. And it’s not only at the numerous Viking festivals around the country either.

Residents at Newburgh have burnt a 16m fishing boat to celebrate the community’s purchase of two plots of land alongside the River Tay. The wooden boat had lain neglected at the site for some years, and the Community Trust felt it was a suitable way to mark the occasion.

The practice seems to be spreading, with Viking boat burning ceremonies being held this year from Dover in the south to the Shetlands in the north, and from Amlwch in Anglesey to the Ouse in Lincolnshire. And it’s not just in the UK, because similar events have been reported from as far afield as Taiwan and the USA.
