Irish Coastguards are monitoring a large oil slick caused by fuel spilled from a Russian naval task force. Indications are that the slick is breaking up 30-40 miles offshore, but it is possible that some oil may come ashore on the south coasts of Ireland and Wales over the next few weeks.
The slick, measuring 4.5km by 5km, contains around 1,000 tonnes of oil. It was released into the sea on Saturday, 50 miles south of Fastnet, when refuelling operations between the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov and a tanker went awry.
