New format gets fans closer to Cowes Classic 2013

A stop in Torquay adds value for fans of the Cowes Classic 2013

A break in tradition will see the racing fleet in this year’s Cowes Classic 2013 stop for fuel in Torquay so that spectators can get up close and personal with the competitors and their boats.

Historically the race, which takes place on September 1 this year, has always seen the boats turn around a marker in Tor Bay before heading back towards the Solent but after a warm welcome from local craft by the marker in last year’s race the competitors decided it was time to get fans even more involved.

The 53rd running of the race will start at 10:00am outside the hosting club, The Royal Yacht Squadron. Organisers say this is indicative of the race’s popularity as previous events have always started outside the house of race founder Sir Max Aitken on the Cowes foreshore.

The fleet will then charge to Torquay, make the stop and be on the water again for a 2:00pm start back to Cowes for the final leg.

For those who can’t make it to Torquay to see the boats in the flesh the regular viewing spots will still give fans a great opportunity to see the fleet in action. The recommended viewing spots are: Hurst Castle, Swansea Head and the hills around Torbay.
