The Fairline Fifty made its debut appearance at the 1986 Southampton Boat Show, at the peak of the mid-1980s boating boom. It was an instant success, selling 24 models in its first six months and ultimately achieving an astonishing run of 125 craft. It took Fairline into a new market, preparing the company and its customers for the introduction of its Squadron series a couple of years later.
Market report
In their pre-launch publicity for the Fifty, Fairline quoted a base price of around £150,000 ex VAT. By the time the boat appeared nine months later this had risen to £175,000 and the model we tested for our 1987 boat report was priced at £216,500 plus VAT including £27,000’s worth of extras, representing a total cost to the buyer of over £250,000. Currently, an earlier model should fetch around £150,000, a later one with the larger engines around £170,000 and a Series II/Fifty One over £200,000.
