Over the next six months, John Boyle and Fionn Crow Howieson will attempt to
circumnavigate the UK and Ireland. Will they succeed? Will they meet disaster
along the way? Whatever the outcome, their monthly skippers’ log and weekly
vodcast will give us invaluable personal insight into our vast coastline.

Below is a rough outline of their journey – if all goes to plan – together with a map, so you can follow their progress. You can download the map by clicking on the image below.

Leg 1the Great Motorboat Tour map

In this opening feature (in October’s MBM), the duo will cruise from their base in Falmouth to Harwich on the east coast.

Leg 2

All going well, the second article (in the November 2011 issue of MBM) will pick up the
story as the pair cruise from Harwich, all the way up the east coast to
Inverness, visiting the Farne Islands en route.

Leg 3

Following a planned jaunt up the Caledonian Canal, the
pair will cruise all along the Scottish coastline to Campbeltown (see the December 2011 issue of MBM).

Leg 4

From Campeltown, John and Fionn hope to motor along
the coast of Ireland, including rounding the notorious Atlantic coast, via
Burtonport, Cleggan, Kilrush and Dingle before cruising the south coast, past
Baltimore, as far as Kilmore Quay (see the January 2012 issue of MBM).

Leg 5

The homeward leg of the journey will see the pair
depart Ireland at Kilmore Quay and head back towards Cornwall via Milford Haven
and Cadgwith Cove (see the February 2012 issue of MBM).
