Japanese motor giant Toyota has turned its hand to boat design with the launch of its first flybridge

Aimed at the leisure boating and fishing markets, the Ponam-35 features a 39ft aluminium hull and is powered by two marinised 4.5-litre fuel-injected V8 diesels, developed from those used to power Toyota’s Land Cruiser 4×4.
Automatic trim tabs are fitted, while computer control of the auxiliary propeller in the bow thruster and the two main propellers allows mooring and casting off to be carried out using just a single joystick.
The cabin interior is fitted with a five-seat sofa and ample storage space, while the owner’s private cabin features a spacious bed and storage area.
The name Ponam is taken from Waipounamu, which in Maori mythology means whale, and Toyota Motor Corporation says it expects to produce 15 of the new boats per year.
