Existing outlets will continue for foreseeable future
MDL Marinas have moved to calm fears among LPG users that the South Coast will soon be devoid of pumps offering the alternative fuel.
The marina operator spoke out after the pump at Lymington was closed, leaving only four outlets on the South Coast.
Manager of MDL’s newly acquired Sparkes Marina Mike Glanville says: “MDL is committed to the services offered at each of its marinas and is maintaining the installation of marine gas for the foreseeable future.”
Liquefied Petroleum Gas is still available at Torquay Marina (MDL), Sparkes Marina in Chichester Harbour (MDL), Cobb’s Quay in Poole (MDL) and at Warsash, on the River Hamble, Pwllheli in North Wales and Titchmarsh Marina near Walton-on-the-Naze. The price for a litre is around 45p.
For those going further afield, it is sold in Guernsey for 35p per litre.
LPG enthusiasts are hoping for a resurgence in the popularity of the gas once the price of red diesel rises, which is expected to happen sometime in the next 18 months.
LPG users install a second fuel tank to run the boat on most of the time, but maintain the original petrol tank in case LPG is not available, in which case the craft can be run on petrol at the flick of a switch.
As is the case with cars running on LPG, the latest generation installations have vastly improved performance – indistinguishable from petrol-engined boats, users claim.
