Britain's Mike Shelton and Jackie Hunt win both SuperSport rounds in Belgium
ExtremeBoat, the British Dragon boat of Mike Shelton and Jackie Hunt repeated its victory on Saturday by winning the second round of the Powerboat P1 SuperSport class at the Belgian Grand Prix of the Sea on Sunday. The result moves the team into a commanding position in the SuperSport World Championship with just the Portuguese Grand Prix remaining.
The lead changed hands no fewer than four times in Sunday’s shorter race, the husband and wife pairing being pushed all the way by VoomVoom, the diesel-powered Hustler of Vee Ganjavian and Charlie Williams Hawkes. Only a last lap navigational blip prevented a first win of the season for VoomVoom.
The choppy seas and blustery conditions forced a late change to the course layout and a 30 minute delay. Boosted by their performances on Saturday, VoomVoom and ExtremeBoat made the early pace, followed closely by Roscioli Hotels Roma, Buzzi Bullet and Sun Lik Beer. These five are the championship’s leading boats and a close battle was always likely as the season builds to its climax. It was a day for the diesels, all of which featured strongly.
In Saturday’s first leg, Roscioli Hotels Roma, piloted by Angelo Tedeschi and Fabio Magnani suffered propeller damage and this clearly affected their attempts to overhaul the leading boats. In the circumstances a third place on Sunday and runners-up spot in the two-legged Grand Prix was an excellent effort. VoomVoom took third spot overall and have now appeared on the podium at the last two events.
